About the Album
(And a little bit about Pythagorean Circle)
After almost 17 years of exclusive engagement with the Cretan lute, wanting to learn as best as I could the traditional music of my homeland, Crete, the island of the gods, there at the end of 2020, I had a strong desire to play the electric guitar again and start creating from scratch, being a natural conductor of the Cosmic Pulse, an extreme metal sound, something that I had stopped doing 17 years ago, as I mentioned above, because I wanted to study Cretan music with complete dedication and without distractions. However, there was a problem. I did not have my own electric guitar, because I had sold my old Jackson with the two double Seymour Duncan magnets in 2004, due to financial constraints, so that I could buy, with the help of my late father, a lute from a traditional instrument shop in Monastiraki. I then borrowed a student guitar from a friend from Rethymno, who didn’t play much and gave me a small 10 watt amplifier, so that I could rediscover the guitar’s rhythm. I was so happy that I could play even on this cheap guitar, which inspired me to compose the piece that, without knowing it at the time, would constitute the cornerstone of my entire musical endeavor.
This piece is none other than Pythagorean Circle. It was fine for a temporary solution, but over time, I realized that I had to find a guitar that was suitable for me and could also cope with the sound I wanted to create, which is the old-fashioned, primitive Black Metal of the 90s that I grew up with and loved. So, in early 2021, I contacted my friend Yannis “Khal Drogo” from Athens, who also has the underground Black Metal band Nocternity and also sets up and resells used guitars, and fortunately, he showed me a Bc Rich Gunslinger that he had for sale, in excellent condition. As soon as I saw and heard this particular guitar, I said that I would acquire it without a second thought and so the instrument came into my possession in early March 2021. From that moment on, I started playing as if there was no tomorrow and one piece followed the other like a rushing torrent, leading me to decide to create the musical work of my life called Pythagorean Circle.
The songs on the album, as well as on the following ones, have been included in the chronological order in which they were composed because each one of them represents a specific and distinct period of my life and I want the listener to listen to the album from beginning
to end so that they can, in a way, feel, based on their own aesthetic criteria, the story that I want to tell them, because the lyrics have to do with Hellenism, the gods, the heroes and the ancestors, but they are also symbolisms of my journey and experiences so far. The tracks are simply like a synthetic structure, because that is exactly what I wanted.
Pure raw Black Metal without complexities and chatter, as a closest possible approximation of the sounds of Nature and the energies that are diffused in the Universe through the Cosmic Pulse. The production was also as simple as it could be, for obvious reasons: Black Fucking Metal! 9 songs of old-fashioned Black Metal and an orchestral outro with the Cretan lute and the same applies to every release of Pythagorean Circle. That is, the combination of the electric raw sound with a stamp for the end titles of each album, the traditional timbre of my place. The recording for the debut self-titled album of Pythagorean Circle took place in Rethymno in the fall of 2023 with pure materials and a lot of love. I especially thank my friend and collaborator Acheron for the design and editing of the logo, the album covers, as well as for the creation of our website. Join the Circle! Thematically, the album is essentially an introduction to the philosophy, principles and general outlook of the Pythagorean Circle, reflecting my personal position in relation to what I love and giving me strength to cope with any adversities that appear in the course of my life. The Greek worldview – cosmovision, the worship of Nature and the gods, heroes like my beloved Odysseus who managed, despite all the difficulties and dangers of his wanderings, to return to his Ithaca and take revenge on the usurping suitors, the Greek way of fighting from the herd with the bronze wall of shields in the phalanx, the versatile inventor Daedalus who gives instructions and prepares his son Icarus to escape from the kingdom of Minos and the paying homage to the altars, the hearths, the gods of our ancestors, the blood and the soil
that gave birth to us. In essence, on this album we ”scrape” the surface of the entire musical project of Pythagorean Circle and on each subsequent album we will delve deeper and deeper. The music of Pythagorean Circle is my legacy to all those who think freely and do not submit to institutions, parties, multinationals, churches, mosques and synagogues. I want to thank everyone who has listened and will listen to my music.
